Rock Eagle 4-H Center: Environmental Education

Independent Curriculum

Depending upon the length of the field study, schools staying overnight are asked to lead classes. Rock Eagle offers a variety of curriculums to choose from or create your can bring your own! Use the following guidelines when deciding how many independent activities your groups needs.

One night stay: One 1-hour night class

Two night stay: One 2-hour day class, two 1-hour night class or one 2-hour night class

Longer stay: Please call Kelly at (706) 484-2834 to determine the proper number of independent classes.

Day Classes

New Games - This activity works well as a daytime or nighttime class. Allows students to experience non-traditional physical activities in a non-competitive way. Class outline (pdf)

Rock Eagle Hike - This 2-hour class consists of hiking the students to the effigy, discussing some of the information known about the mound, and then hiking the students back to the center. You may also point out interesting things you see along the way (wildlife, historic sites, etc.). Class outline (pdf)

Cemetery Studies - Learn about and explore two very different historical cemeteries located adjacent to Rock Eagle property. Students will compare and contrast the physical and cultural characteristics of each. Class outline (pdf)

Dragons and Dragonflies - Students work on written communication skills by writing and drawing. Assist students gain an understanding of the importance of descriptive writing. Class outline (pdf)

River of Words - An international poetry and art project designed to nurture respect and understanding of the natural world. Students are encouraged to learn their "ecological address" by honing their observation skills and describing their "place in space" through poetry and art. Evening Classes

Videos - Choose from our list of videos and learn about the amazing world of plants and animals. Worksheets are available.

  • Insects: Understand why these amazing creatures are so important to our ecosystem. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)
  • Secret World of Bats: Watch these nocturnal flying mammals and discuss their many adaptations. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)
  • Venomous Snakes of the Southeast: Join Okefenokee Joe as he discusses venomous snakes of the Southeast. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)
  • Trees: How do trees "talk" to each other? Where can you find a tree older than the pyramids? Find out the answer to these questions and many more in this eyewitness video. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)
  • Animal Adaptations: Discover the various adaptations that different species of animals have undergone over time. Understand how changes over time in an animal's environment can affect the lives of the generations that follow. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)
  • Food Chains: Explore the cycle of energy and its many participants from producers to consumers to decomposers. Worksheet (pdf) and Answer Key (pdf)

Planet Earth DVD - Choose a segment from the 11-part BBC series, each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.)

Campfire - Have your own campfire! Participate in a fun, recreational, and social activity that is always a welcome addition to the Rock Eagle trip. Class outline (pdf)

Dance - Give your students another taste of social life. We have CD players, tape decks, and microphones available for your use. Let us know in advance, so we can get equipment ready. You or your students will need to provide the music.

Movie Night - Bring a current video for your students to watch. Just let us know in advance and we will reserve a VCR for you.

Night Hike - The woods surrounding Rock Eagle are a great place to explore at night. Class outline (pdf)

Social - Bring chips, popcorn, and other snacks and let the students have some time to just hang out with their friends. You may use the building assigned to you.

Sports - Enjoy softball, volleyball, kickball, and other sports. Some equipment is available at the main office.

Talent Show - Many of your students may have talents they will want to share with others. There are pianos in many of the buildings and a microphone can be set up.  Please let us know in advance what equipment you will need.
